Berwyn View delivers a durable, all-weather space

Berwyn View Pump Track

Clark & Kent Contractors were proud to be selected to build the Ellesmere Pump Track, located at Berwyn View Recreation Ground in Ellesmere, Shropshire. The BMX pump track was developed following strong community backing and consultation, with input from local schoolchildren and residents. The track is designed for cyclists, scooter riders, skateboarders and inline skaters of all ages and ability levels, delivering a durable, all-weather space for outdoor recreation.

The track is approximately 240 metres long and 1.5 metres wide throughout its main loop. A flowing layout made to maximise ride momentum and fun without needing to pedal. It includes rollers, curved banked turns, berms, and a variety of pump track features to cater to both beginners and experienced riders.

The base works included utilising the existing soil, installing a geotextile membrane, then crushed aggregates and surfacing with a specialist asphalt/tarmac wearing course. The drainage scheme included French drains and soakaways, where needed, to handle wet areas. The ride surface is designed to be weather-resistant and low-maintenance.

Ellesmere Town Council developed the track in response to youth demand for a wheeled-sports facility, including cycling, scooters, and skateboards. The council aimed to create a safe, off-street space for riding, promote active lifestyles that cater to all ages and skill levels, and foster community engagement. With a guarantee of £15,000 from Shropshire Council and a crowdfunding campaign on Spacehive, the community raised more than £70,000 towards the project.

Community consultations helped shape the design. The track provides an inclusive outdoor amenity, promoting health, fitness, skill-building, and offering opportunities for safe wheeled sports. This track will deliver more than just cycling infrastructure. It will be a gathering point for families, youth, and outdoor enthusiasts. It's a space that supports wellbeing, builds confidence, encourages physical activity, and creates a sense of community. It's built to last, usable in all seasons, and inclusive to a wide variety of riders.
