Charnwood Borough Council chose Clark & Kent Contractors to design and build a skatepark extension for a large existing skatepark in Southfields Park, Loughborough.
Working closely with the user group, we created a favourable design for all the skatepark users to be fun and safe for BMX, skateboards, scooters and rollerblades. The user group was an eclectic mix of various disciplines, and we provided a very balanced park that was well-rounded and suited to all styles of riders and skaters.
The council planning and building control department was involved at the design and tender stage so the client could sign off all drawings, specs and calculations throughout the construction. Works got underway in the spring of 2019 after much consultation with the users, Charnwood council, local homeowners and several more stakeholders.
Skatepark construction included earthworks, drainage, steel fabrication and installation, concrete foundations, stone surfacing, and specialist concrete formwork and finishing. The skatepark design had many elements, including grind boxes and ledges, raised decks and manual pads.
A corner bowl was incorporated into the existing flat bank jersey combination, and a china bank gave good variety and width. A roller and level change was also included to give the skatepark a full spectrum of lines so users can approach from multiple directions.
The Loughborough skatepark building project took six weeks to complete and was exceptionally well received by the users and council officials. It has had a positive impact, allowing more users to enjoy the skatepark and, most importantly, giving young users an additional provision to hone their skatepark skills.
