Clark and Kent Contractors were chosen to design and build the Stoops wheeled sports area in Burnley because of the high quality of their construction work, cost efficiency, design, and consultation expertise.
The Stoops skatepark scheme has given youngsters and skaters in a deprived community the opportunity to enjoy positive, active engagement and promote a sense of community. Following a public tender, Clark and Kent Contractors were chosen to design and build the Stoops wheeled sports area. The tender was evaluated on four main criteria: quality, cost-efficiency, design, and consultation.
Bespoke designs were produced with local police and social support groups to best fit the unusual footprint available for development. Several ongoing public consultations took place to develop final designs and ensure complete user satisfaction.
Approved skatepark construction work began in the summer of 2019, with several items ordered in advance to ensure swift and efficient project delivery. The build was completed on time and within budget. It included relocating existing street furniture, a comprehensive surface water drainage scheme and the Tarmac resurfacing of a large access area.
Construction work included site clearance, importation, shaping and compaction of material and sub-base works. Other work included a drainage scheme, tarmac surfacing, formwork, steelwork and concrete casting.
The skatepark build followed several years of fundraising by the Stoops & Hargher Clough Youth and Community Centre, supported by fundraising experts Proffits CIC. The project was also funded by grants from Sport England, Calico, and the Lancashire Environmental Fund, with contributions from Burnley Council and Lancashire County Council.

I think the skatepark is a fantastic asset for this area to have. The park is so well used so this is a great addition to it. The skatepark is something different and it adds a whole new dimension to the area. We are looking into getting some professional artwork put onto it too to help add to the overall appearance. Skateparks are a great way for people to stay active and get outside, getting people outside is very important. It's a really nice area and the job has been done very well.
Cllr Anne Kelly, Mayor of Burnley
Throughout the contract, it was a pleasure to work with this company. Communication was always very good, the standard of work they achieved was excellent, the site staff were very professional and the contract was completed with budget, without use of any contingency. Most importantly the design of the wheeled sports area is very good, providing something for all users. I have no hesitation in recommending this company and am happy to respond to more detailed enquiries.
