Wickwar Pump Track Construction

Wickwar Pump Track is a recently developed facility located at Wickwar Playing Fields, near Chipping Sodbury in South Gloucestershire, UK. The track was created with significant local involvement and funding contributions to provide a dedicated space for BMX biking, skateboarding, and scooters.
Clark & Kent Contractors were approached to deliver a new pump track facility in the village of Wickwar in Gloucestershire, to be built on the playing fields under the auspices of Wickwar Playing Fields Association and supported by Wickwar Parish Council.
The project was part of broader enhancements to local recreational facilities driven by developer funding (Section 106) and local community demand.

Track features

The pump track is approximately 65 metres in loop length and is designed with a series of bumps, rollers, and banked turns. It accommodates a variety of small-wheeled sports, including BMX bikes, scooters, and skateboards. The layout features a double track, where the outer track merges into a middle track and then rejoins the outer track, creating a fast and well-designed ride suitable for all ages and abilities.

Community and funding

The project received over £115,000 in developer funding through the Section 106 mechanism, supporting both the BMX pump track and other improvements to sports facilities in the area. Wickwar Playing Fields Association managed the construction and promotion of the pump track, ensuring community engagement throughout the process.

Design and build highlights

The pump track is designed with a focus on flow, safety, and usability. The layout was optimised through consultation with local stakeholders to ensure it fitted well in the field, took into account local terrain, drainage, and sightlines. We prepared the sub-base properly to ensure stability, implemented drainage solutions to avoid water pooling, and installed a durable tarmac surface wearing course. The design ensures all-weather usability and reduced maintenance over time, while offering a smooth ride for users.

Impact and community benefits

Wickwar Playing Fields is also home to running courses and leisure spaces, making it a broader hub for community recreation. Feedback and ongoing design input were solicited from residents through the parish council's outreach, ensuring the track meets the community's needs. The track stands out as a valuable resource for sports and leisure in the region, effectively supported by both developer funding and enthusiastic local involvement. Since opening, the community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, particularly in terms of how the ride feels, how accessible the facility is, and how well it integrates with the surrounding playing field setting.
