The Duddon Pump Track in Barrow-in-Furness had been a well-loved facility for many years, but, like many outdoor wheeled sports tracks, it had begun to show wear: uneven surfaces, drainage issues, and sections that no longer offered a safe or fun ride. Clark & Kent Contractors were commissioned to redesign the layout in key sections and apply a full tarmac surface, transforming the track and restoring its usability for all ages and skill levels.
The older pump track with worn tarmac and concrete or mixed surface was showing damage, erosion and poor flow in parts. Clark & Kent Contractors reworked problematic sections by smoothing out transitions, repairing sub-base where needed, regrading to improve water runoff, reshaping berms and rollers, and realigning certain stretches to restore ride flow and safety.
After the redesign, the track was resurfaced with a specialist tarmac wearing course to deliver a durable, smooth, all-weather finish. Drainage enhancements and base preparation were carried out to ensure longevity and reduce maintenance.
We kept and enhanced what was already working well, while addressing sections that were causing issues. The updated layout now features more consistent flow, better transitions between features, improved banking in the turns, and a surface that confidently handles wet weather without degrading. Users can enjoy a more predictable ride, with fewer bumps, less slipping or pooling water, and safer lines throughout.
Since reopening, the renewed Duddon Pump Track has seen increased uptake from local riders, youth groups, and casual users. The tarmac surface has made the track far more reliable, leading to fewer closures and fewer unsafe conditions after rain. Local feedback highlights how much safer and more enjoyable the rides feel, and comments often point to the quality of the new surface and the reworked features. It's become a more inclusive facility usable by BMX, scooter, skateboard, and inline skate users.
Old, deteriorating surfaces can discourage use, compromise safety, and require frequent patching. By redesigning and resurfacing the Duddon track with high-quality tarmac, this project extended the facility's lifespan, improved safety, reduced maintenance, and restored community confidence. The result is a pump track that not only looks good but rides smoothly and will continue serving the people of Barrow-in-Furness for years.
