Pickering Pump Track, Yorkshire

Pickering BMX Pump Track

Nestled in the scenic town of Pickering, North Yorkshire, a brand-new pump track has become a hub for thrill-seekers, cyclists, and skaters. Designed and constructed by Clark & Kent Contractors, this purpose-built track offers an exhilarating and accessible space for riders of all ages and abilities.

The Pickering Pump Track project is a shining example of community-focused development, providing an inclusive and exciting environment for active outdoor recreation. The aim is to create a dynamic and sustainable cycling experience that encourages outdoor activity while promoting social interaction.

It is a multi-use track that caters to all, from beginners to experienced riders, without compromising on safety or fun. The pump track design incorporates a single loop to ensure a seamless, continuous ride over smooth bumps and banked turns thatcater to different riding styles and skills, from beginner-friendly straights to advanced rhythm sections.

A standout feature of the pump track is its inclusivity. The track is designed to be accessible for riders of all skill levels. The track layout builds confidence for newer riders while providing enough technical elements to engage experienced users.

Clark & Kent uses cutting-edge construction techniques and durable materials to ensure track longevity. The asphalt surface provides a smooth, low-maintenance riding experience in all weather conditions. Attention to drainage and environmental integration is the key to maintaining sustainability and minimising the environmental footprint.

The track's park location provides seating and shaded areas for families and friends to enjoy the action from comfortable vantage points. The location was carefully chosen to integrate with existing outdoor amenities.

Safety is paramount in the design and construction process. The gradual transitions and smooth berms ensure a controlled environment where riders can progress at their own pace. Signage and design elements help riders understand the track's flow, reducing the risk of collisions and accidents. Wide, flowing lines accommodate different riding speeds, helping to manage user traffic effectively.

Clark & Kent brings industry-leading expertise in pump track construction to projects like this, from initial concept designs to final surface installation. Working closely with Pickering Town Council, the team ensured the project adhered to all safety regulations and local planning requirements.

The construction process involved:

Site Preparation: Clearing and levelling the ground while preserving the natural landscape.
Track Shaping: Sculpting the rollers, berms, and jumps to create a fluid, rideable surface.
Asphalt Surfacing: Laying the asphalt to provide a fast, low-maintenance riding experience.
Finishing Touches: Adding landscaping, seating, and signage to enhance the user experience.

The Pickering Pump Track attracts riders across North Yorkshire, boosting local tourism and encouraging more people to engage in outdoor sports. Local schools and cycling clubs have started using it for training, physical education, and after-school activities. The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive. Families appreciate the inclusivity and safe environment, while riders praise the track's smooth flow and challenging features.

The Pickering Pump Track is more than just a recreational space--it's a community-driven project that fosters physical activity, social engagement, and fun for all. Clark & Kent Contractors delivered a facility that perfectly aligns with the town's vision, combining innovative design with practical use. The pump track is a testament to what's possible when local councils and expert contractors work together to create spaces that serve all ages and abilities.

The pump track scheme run by the Pickering Town CIC (PTCIC) was delivered through £30,000 grant funding from the North Yorkshire Council and North Yorkshire Sports England Rural Capital fund. Pickering Community Park is located at Woodlands Park on the edge of Pickering and has an adventure playground and an outdoor gym area with tracks circumnavigating the park suitable for running or walking.
