Based at Knowsley Leisure and Culture Park in Huyton, Liverpool, the 400m velodrome has a 7m cycle track and the BMX track built to a national standard that includes a pump track. The BMX track built by Clark & Kent Contractors is the first of its kind in the UK and only the second in Europe.
The Knowsley BMX track at Huyton is constructed within a tarmac 400-metre outdoor velodrome that incorporates a 160-metre pump track for learners and beginner riders. Other services include extensive power and water points, a Bensink starting gate, a BMX rider pens area, and a tarmac area reserved for the Velodrome riders.
Work was carried out in a two-phase construction period for builders Balfour Beatty in conjunction with Knowsley Council. The overall build time for this ambitious project was just eight weeks. The facility offers bike and safety equipment hire as well as training and accreditation sessions for the public, schools and clubs.
The BMX track can be found in the centre of the velodrome. The centre attracts more than 10,000 users each year and hosts local, regional and national cycling events. Knowsley BMX club is one of a number of clubs based at the new facility.
The velodrome and BMX track construction was funded by NHS Knowsley, Sports England and British Cycling. Prescot Eagles Road Club and Liverpool Century were consulted in developing the velodrome and BMX track.
