The design and construction of an international standard BMX track at the Broadwood Stadium, Cumbernauld, near Glasgow, was carried out by Clark & Kent Contractors.
Following the success of the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, legacy funds were allocated for the design and construction of an international standard BMX track near Glasgow. North Lanarkshire Council selected Clark & Kent Contractors to design and build a new state-of-the-art facility at the Broadwood Stadium.
Working as the principal contractor, Clark & Kent used the services of fencing and electrical sub-contractors to deliver the project on time and within budget. The final design saw Clark & Kents construct a bespoke BMX racetrack, the first of its kind in Europe. The BMX combination track features:
The installation of 5-metre and 3-metre start hills incorporating Bensink start gates.
The erection of bespoke Clark & Kent-designed start hill canopies.
The installation of a floodlighting system.
Building a comprehensive drainage scheme.
The erection of spectator fencing and perimeter track fencing.
The asphalt surfacing of BMX track corners.
Building an asphalt finish line and braking zone
The construction of a BMX bike pens area.
The build time for this ambitious project was just 12 weeks. North Lanarkshire Leisure Trust manage the facility, and the local BMX club Cumbernauld Centurions operates from the site.
NL Leisure says the brand-new outdoor BMX track at Broadwood Stadium is "guaranteed to get your heart racing. Beginners and experienced riders are welcome, and we offer a full range of programmes from one-to-one coaching, small groups, private hire and open sessions."
Cumbernauld BMX Club was formed in 2009 as a sporting outlet for local youngsters. The club works with young people, and all the coaches and committee members are registered with the Protecting Vulnerable Groups Scheme, managed and delivered by Disclosure Scotland.
The standard of the BMX track, coupled with the commitment of both North Lanarkshire Leisure Trust and Cumbernauld Centurions, saw the UK BMX Series return to Scotland for the first time in 25 years during the 2015 UK National BMX Series.
Cumbernauld Centurions recently set up a rider development race team of about a dozen BMX riders--the NLL Haro Race Team. North Lanarkshire Leisure (NLL) is a registered Scottish charity regulated by the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR). Its purpose is to deliver sports, recreational, health-improvement, and social welfare services to the community of North Lanarkshire.
