Wickwar Pump Track Case Study
Tarmac Pump Track Construction by Clark & Kent Contractors
Project Overview: Wickwar Pump Track, South Gloucestershire
Clark & Kent Contractors were approached to deliver a new pump track facility in the village of Wickwar, to be built on the playing fields under the auspices of Wickwar Playing Fields Association and supported by Wickwar Parish Council. The project was part of broader enhancements to local recreational facilities driven by developer funding (Section 106) and local community demand.
Project Details
Location: Playing Fields, Wickwar, South Gloucestershire
Purpose: To provide a free, accessible pump track facility for BMX, scooters, skateboards, and all wheeled sports users. The design was intended to enhance active outdoor opportunities for local use, including for children, youth groups, and other residents.
Funding & Support: The project was enabled through S106 developer contributions, local authority backing, and community involvement.
Design & Build Highlights
The pump track was designed with flow, safety, and usability in mind. Features include rollers, banked turns (berms), rhythm sections, and smooth transitions to allow riders to maintain momentum ("pump") without needing to pedal. The layout was optimised through consultation with local stakeholders to ensure it fitted well in the field, took into account local terrain, drainage, and sightlines.
Materials & Surfacing
We prepared the sub€'base properly to ensure stability, implemented drainage solutions to avoid water pooling, and installed a durable tarmac surface wearing course. The design ensures all€'weather usability and reduced maintenance over time, while offering a smooth ride for users.
Impact & Community Benefits
Since opening, the Wickwar Pump Track has become a valued asset for the village. It offers a safe, inclusive space for young people and adults to ride and practise wheeled sports. It supports physical activity, encourages social interaction, and gives local users a built facility in walking / cycling distance. The community feedback has been positive, particularly in terms of how the ride feels, how accessible the facility is, and how well it fits in with the playing field setting.
Why This Project Matters
Pump tracks like Wickwar bring renewed life to community green spaces. Rather than frequent temporary repairs, a well€'designed tarmac pump track improves safety, usability, and longevity. It serves diverse users, from beginners to more experienced riders, and becomes a facility that the whole village can be proud of.
