Landport Pump Track
Landport Pump Track is a wheeled sports facility designed, built, and delivered by Clark & Kent Contractors. In the Landport area of Lewes, East Sussex, this pump track combines high-quality design and construction with community engagement to create a new hub for riders, families, and outdoor activities.
A key feature of the track is its multilevel design, which makes it suitable for beginners through to more experienced riders. The layout features gentle rollers, flowing berms, rhythm sections, and technical features, enabling users to develop skills progressively.
The track was built using durable, long-lasting surfacing materials with proper drainage and weather- and wear-resistant properties. All features are constructed to meet or exceed safety standards.
Paths were laid to connect to Landport public walkways, provide accessible surfaces for scooters, bikes, and skateboards, and include provisions for spectators and were designed with safety in mind.
The project includes landscaping, fencing, lighting (where applicable), safety signage, seating, and bike parking to enhance the user experience.
Clark & Kent worked closely with Landport local authorities, community groups, and intended users of the pump track to gather feedback and understand what features mattered most.
In-house design and construction
Using in-house design specialists, the track was modelled with attention to flow, safety, and usability. Terrain, site topography, drainage, and materials are all considered to ensure longevity and performance.
The construction phase included site preparation, earthworks, surfacing, safety finishing, landscaping, and the installation of supporting infrastructure (fencing, seating, signage). Regular inspections and quality control were built into the construction process.
Where we encountered limited or uneven terrain, we utilised the existing topography, balancing cut/fill, shaping berms and rollers to match the natural elevations .
We installed effective drainage, using weather-resistant materials and surfacing solutions to prevent pooling or deterioration.
The track is designed to ensure safety across a range of skill levels. It is designed with progressive difficulty, clear signage, smooth transitions between features, and spectator/safety zones.
We minimised disruption during the phased build works and communicated clearly with neighbours, ensuring timely project management.
Once complete, the facility was inspected, safety-certified, and officially opened to the public, with supporting documentation provided for use and maintenance.
Benefits to the community
The track provides space for physical activity — cycling, scootering, and skateboarding — that supports fitness and mental well-being, especially for youth.
It has become a focal point for meetings, informal sports, and events. It has helped to strengthen community ties and offers a positive space for people to gather outdoors.
The facility enhances Landport's public spaces, improving local infrastructure, connectivity, and sense of place. The track helps riders of all ages develop skills, confidence, and a greater interest in competitive wheeled sports.
The pump track was supported with public funding through the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL), alongside upgrades to the adjacent skatepark.
The project is part of a broader “Changing Spaces” initiative examining outdoor recreation and multi-user cycling trails around Lewes, linking Landport to regional paths and cycling infrastructure.
These improvements aim to encourage healthy lifestyles, give young people recreation options, and better connect neighbourhoods to the surrounding countryside.
